Tight Ties Make IOP Rise

Posted 9/5/2003

For the style conscious, tightening up your tie for a tidier impression may cause more harm than good. A study published in the August issue of the British Journal of Ophthalmology found that a tight necktie raised intraocular pressure and increased a patient's chance of developing glaucoma.

Researchers from the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary tested the IOP of 20 healthy males and 20 who had glaucoma. The patients were first tested wearing an open-neck shirt, and then three minutes after wearing a tightly tied tie. The results: 60% of the men with glaucoma had a mean increase in IOP of 1mm Hg, and 70% of the healthy ones had a mean increase in IOP of 2.6mm Hg after wearing a tie. A tight tie constricts the jugular vein, which in turn raises IOP, researchers believe.
